Nearly Half of All Adults Own a Smartphone

According to this Pew Internet report, the number of adults claiming to own a smartphone as their wireless phone device it up to 46%. So nearly 1/2 of all adults now own a smartphone. This is up from 33% just last May. The most recent findings were published in march 2012.

It's important to keep in mind that while smartphone market penetration has reached nearly 50%, that also means over half of all adults still do not use a smartphone. Sometimes it seems like everyone has a smartphone, but this probably depends greatly on your environment. We will see how smartphone usage goes over the next couple of years. As of now it would not be an overstatement to say that the smartphone market is huge.
